‘A or B?’, rather than ‘Yes or No?’

Asking someone "Yes or No".

I have found that asking ‘A or B?’ often yields greater responses than ‘Yes or No?’.

The situation was in a speaking club, where we were having an impromptu competition. I had previously asked some of the members if they would take part, and they had said ‘No’. However, when asked, on the night, “Will you be in the Open section or Novice section”, they responded and went on to take part (and, in some cases, to win places in the top 3).

If they haven’t thought about it, when asked ‘Yes or No’, they may simply say ‘No’ because they haven’t made a conscious decision to say ‘Yes’. However, when faced with the question ‘A or B’, they still have the option of saying ‘No’, but it is not as visible, and if they have not made a conscious decision to say ‘No’, they probably will not choose it.

My point: Ask people ‘A or B’, rather than ‘Yes or No’.

Have you thought about this before?

What are your experiences in this subject?

Hedgehog/Praying Mantis Photos

I was looking through my photos, and I found these two that I thought were the best animal photos I have. I did edit them slightly.

A praying mantis on a white rose.

A hedgehog next to our garden.

A human criminal? A non-standard Hero? Of course not!

Wanted! Space Police III officers! Sign up below!
(Space Police officers must be humans. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.)

There is one thing that really annoys me about some LEGO themes, namely, that the ‘good guys’ are limited to a particular type. Some themes in which I have seen this are HERO Factory (current) and Space Police III (2009/10).

HERO Factory has heroes, which are all made by the Hero Factory, and villains, at least one of which was originally a hero. But why are there no other protagonists? Why have no other robots joined the fight against evil? It seems that the protagonists are limited to just heroes constructed by the Hero Factory.

Space Police III is even more ‘exclusive’. All of the Space Police officers are humans. None are aliens. On the other hand, all of the antagonists are aliens.

Why is that? It seems to be that only humans can join the Space Police. Aliens are (well, were) not allowed. All aliens are criminals, no humans are.

Some themes don’t have this, such as non-siding themes like Minifigures, TECHNIC, Creator, and Friends. Other themes have similar type characters – in Kingdoms/City/Agents/Pirates, all the characters are humans, and it is assumed that they can choose which side to be on.

In licensed themes, there may or may not be this issue, depending on the theme. Regardless of whether there is or not, it is not LEGO’s fault.

Some themes have a valid reason for all of the aliens to be on one side, against the humans. In Alien Conquest, the aliens are invading Earth, so all of them would be against the humans. In Castle, there is the same thing with the trolls invading the ‘Western Kingdom’.

It could be argued that Space Police III also has this, but that is not the way it appears. It more seems to have an established community – in which all aliens are criminals and no humans are, of course.

What do you think?

  • Do you think that there is a valid reason for all aliens to be criminals, and all humans policemen? (Space Police)
  • Do you think that HERO Factory should have some non-HERO Factory heroes?

I’d love to hear your perspective!

LOTR Set Pictures

Well, another toy fair is under way, and hopefully we will get some close-up pictures of the LOTR sets there. But, here is one picture:

If you zoom in (I’ve uploaded the photo full size, so that you can do that), you should be able to see the seventh set, the Orc Forge.

More Sunsets

We have been having a lot of wonderful sunsets recently. Here are some more:

LOTR prelims

Wow, this theme sure is going on fast — it was only announced on Saturday. But anyway, we have prelims of 9469-9474. Many of the minifigures are what I thought they would be — but more. Excellent!

  • 9469 – Gandalf, Frodo (what I thought)
  • 9470 – Shelob, Frodo, Sam, Gollum (what I thought)
  • 9471 – Uruk-Hai (4), Rohan Soldier (2)
  • 9472 – Aragorn, Black Rider (2), Frodo, Hobbit (added another hobbit in)
  • 9473 – Gimli, Legolas, Orc (2), Skeleton (2), Boromir, Frodo
  • 9474 – Theoden, Uruk-hai (5), Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn

Well, the 5 and 4 Uruk-hai of 9471 and 9474 are a surprise – but a good surprise.

LOTR Set Rumours

LOTR set rumours – these are just rumours.

  • 9469 Gandalf Arrives
  • 9470 Shelob Attacks
  • 9471 Uruk-hai Army
  • 9472 Attack on Weathertop
  • 9473 The Mines of Moria
  • 9474 The Battle of Helm’s Deep
  • 9495 – Battle pack with Boromir, Faramir, and weapons
  • 9476 The Orc Forge

The Boromir / Faramir battle pack looks exciting – I hope(d) that LOTR would have battle packs. Two people seems not enough for a battle pack to me; maybe three, but not two. 9476 and 9471 look like they could be battle packs as well.

Minifigs – (these are just my ideas, not confirmed minifigs)

  • 9469 – Gandalf, Frodo
  • 9470 – Shelob, Frodo, Sam, Gollum
  • 9471 – Uruk-Hai (X)
  • 9472 – Aragorn, Black Rider(s), Frodo
  • 9473 – Gimli, Legolas, Orc(s)
  • 9474 – Theoden, Rider(s), Orc(s)
  • 9475 – Boromir, Faramir
  • 9476 – Orcs

THESE ARE JUST MY IDEAS. FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ON WHAT YOU THINK THEY SHOULD INCLUDE, BUT DON’T PUT THE LIST ALL OVER THE INTERNET AS VALID RUMOURS. (If there is such a thing as a valid rumour :D )

Sunsets

On Monday and Wednesday last week, there were some brilliant sunsets. Here are the photos of them.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings confirmed!

Finally, LEGO has confirmed that they are in the process of creating a Lord of the Rings theme. The teaser site isn’t much, just one image, but it proves that they are working on it.

If you want words about it, LEGO’s announcement is here. It appears that it is coming out in June 2012.

Well, I’m looking forward to this theme.
